Shaft Slicker/Cue Slicker

The subject of this review involves the shaft maintenance tool named the Shaft Slicker. I want to know if this product provides any usefulness to the cue and if it is worth the $2.50 price tag. I plan to test this on one of my shafts and check results.

The first thing that I notice about this device when I received it is that it didn’t come in any form of packaging or instructions. Noticing this, I decided to pay a visit to several places that sold this particular item and noticed the device is sold from a large cardboard backer. The lack of instructions for the slicker is somewhat disturbing especially for people unfamiliar to cue care. While some will know to just take a few swipes with the slicker, the more zealous may do more than that which could harm the shaft.

My performance test involves running the Shaft Slicker up and down the shaft 4 times. The results weren’t very encouraging. In just four swipes, I noticed a large amount of sawdust taken from the shaft. I repeat the test again with similar results.

My physical examination of this slicker reveals a very simply constructed device. The outer covering is just a yarn like material that is sewn over the working part of the slicker. Looking into the device, I find the working part is nothing more than a scouring pad.

My final conclusion on the Shaft Slicker is not to waste your money on this device if you value your cue. While it does do a decent job of cleaning the shaft, it does so by very abrasive means. The device takes off way too much wood in my opinion. If you still want to buy such an item, I would suggest you go buy a package of Brillo pads at your local 99 store since these are the same things as the working part of the Shaft Slicker. At least you get three pads for a fraction of the price of a Shaft Slicker.

My Comment: I think that Cue Silk is the best product for a natural wood shaft. The Wood ought to be conditioned prior to slicking it of course. Cue Silk works the best for me. I am not sure abut I think that using BioSilk which is a hair treatment works just about the same. I tried that on my Joss cue just to see and it works damn'' close if not the same.

My Comment: It''s quite useful though... when you''re using a house cue. It helps clean the grime, tackiness and (somewhat) slicks the shaft of those often icky house cues. =)
